The main character lives on a planet that was settled by a strict religious
group. Over time, their custom of modesty about oneself evolved to the
point that using the words "I", "me", "myself", and such like became offensive.
People who refer to themselves in the first person are called "selfbarers",
which is ruder than nudity in public. The narrator's views about this custom
begin to change due to a friendship he develops with a man from off-planet.
