This novel tells the story of the first Orbital Tower to be built. Sometimes
referred to in other novels as "beanstalks", orbital towers are made possible
by centering the tower in geosynchronous orbit, suspending the tower to
Earth's surface in one direction and further into space in the other direction.
This is a cheaper and more efficient way of getting things into space than
by using rockets.
