This book and its sequel (The Snarkout Boys and the Baconburg Horror), both by Daniel Pinkwater, are full of wild, imaginitive and thoroughly enviable outings of the main characters. Sneaking out late at night to go to some old movie theater in the old, vaguely-ethnic section of town; discovering the entire city-beneath-the-city; giving a spontaneous speech in the park...full of things that I wanted to do when I first read the book (still do, as a matter of fact). A far more quirky and less predictable book than much of what is put out for children, these two are a great read for anybody who likes to have their sense of whimsy tickled (I probably read them first in fourth grade).
